![]() ![]() I was a fan for quite a few years when none of them was at the top of their game. I feel very fortunate to have the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, and Penn State all on the upswing at the same time. The way I figure it, win a couple World Series the next 10 years with Harper and Trout, then I don't care if their production drops off near the end.īesides, it sure will be an entertaining team to watch. Owners would not do this if they will not turn a nice profit. Cushman takes the blame, but that move had Hal written all over it. Nobody else wanted him on a long term deal, and they got zero good above average years out of him. The Yankees 7 year deal with Jacoby Elsbury was pretty bad. Harper will also be several years younger than Howard was when he signed his big deal. Signing harpe at his age has little to do with the signing of Howard as a relative comparison. First they were bidding against themselves and had I think at least another year of control through arbitration for his services, second he was already in steep decline offensively when they signed him, third he was an extreme minus player both in the field and on the bases his entire career and that was only going to get worse as he aged, and finally he was a lard butt that clearly wasn’t going to age well. The Howard deal was argueably the worst contract ever handed out by a Mlb team. The Phillies can absorb some bad money but they aren't the yankees. 10 years is too long and IMO there is too much risk for this to turn into a Ryan Howard type cripelling deal. ![]() Wait until Harper slumps or is injured and the team is struggling and unable to make major moves with all of this locked up money. Philly fans will be excited now if they get one of these 2. There are a lot of smarter baseball people than me so hopefully the deciding people at the Phillies have a few of these minds and they know what they are doing. I don't like these huge long term guaranteed contracts so I won't be upset if they don't land either. There are still other good free agents on the market, and plenty of bad teams that should have signed them a month or two ago. I guess they could be lying, but something's up when two guys like Harper and Machado have trouble finding serious suitors. The Red Sox are claiming that they lost money, but wouldn't have if not for the luxury tax. Too many teams are tanking on purpose, content to allow good players to seek big contracts elsewhere. Big market teams are supposedly sick of the huge luxury tax payouts, especially when several teams are content to not spend it on players, like intended. They are both 26, and proven, top talents. It's odd seeing two guys like Machado and Harper unsigned for so long. I know he grew up a Phillies fan, but him leaving the Angels isn't some forgone conclusion. He is their only draw, and he supposedly loves the organization. I'd be surprised if the Angels ever trade Trout. Phillies make an absolute fortune from Comcast deal, so they are loaded with cash. They may even try to trade for him during 2020 season - the last year of his Angels contract. Phillies will still have enough money to sign Mike Trout in 2 years, who is a die hard Philadelphia fan. Realmuto will be like the star quarterback of the Phillies team. to catch for protection in batting lineup for Harper. Something like at least 10 of his fly ball outs in Washington last year would have been homeruns in Philly.Īnd Phillies went after J.T. Harper is projected to have a significant jump in stats hitting in Citizens Bank Park. ![]()
